Who Can Join?
To take part in the JoynOne Working Holiday Programme, you first need to be able to get a Working Holiday Visa for Japan from the Japanese embassy or consulate in charge of your country of residence.
Below is a general summary of the usual conditions. Exact rules can change, so applicants should always double-check the details on the Japanese embassy/consulate website in their country.
You must hold a passport from a country that has a Working Holiday agreement with Japan.
At the moment, that includes (but may not be limited to):
- Argentina
- Australia
- Austria
- Canada
- Chile
- Czech Republic
- Denmark
- Estonia
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Hong Kong
- Hungary
- Iceland
- Ireland
- Korea (Republic of Korea)
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Netherlands
- New Zealand
- Norway
- Poland
- Portugal
- Slovakia
- Spain
- Sweden
- Taiwan
- United Kingdom
- Uruguay
(Always confirm on the official Japanese embassy website for your country, as agreements can change or new ones may be added.)
- Generally, you must be between 18 and 30 years old at the time you apply.
- Some countries (for example, certain agreements with Canada or the UK) may have slightly different details, so the applicant should check their local embassy page.
You usually need to show that you can support yourself at the beginning of your stay, for example by providing:
- Proof of sufficient funds (a recent bank statement).
- The exact amount required is different for each country, so this must be checked on your country’s Japanese embassy website.
- Proof of a flight ticket (or enough funds to buy a return/onward ticket).
- Some embassies require a booked return ticket, others accept proof of funds only. This also depends on nationality.
Most embassies expect that:
- You are in good health (they may ask for a medical certificate, depending on the country).
- You have no serious criminal record.
Some embassies may ask for a police clearance certificate or similar document.
The allowed period of stay depends on your nationality and the agreement between your country and Japan. In general:
- Up to 2 years total (either as one stay or two periods):
- Canada, United Kingdom (e.g. two consecutive years or two separate one-year stays, depending on the agreement and rules at the time)
- Two separate one-year stays:
- Austria, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Slovakia
- Up to 18 months:
- Australia
- Up to 1 year:
- Most other eligible nationalities
- The visa is usually processed in around 2 weeks, but this can vary by embassy, season, and your individual case.
Applicants should always apply early enough before their intended travel date.
Our Customer Reviews
Hear from people who’ve already started their Japan Working Holiday with JoynOne by their side.
I was super nervous about coming to Japan alone at 20, especially with money and work. JoynOne helped me sort out housing before I arrived and explained what kind of part-time jobs were realistic for my Japanese level. Within two weeks of landing I had a room, a SIM card, a bank account alternative, and a convenience store job. I never felt like I was doing this alone.

I didn’t want just a language school or just a job; I wanted time to travel and experience Japan. The Working Holiday Programme was perfect. JoynOne answered all my questions on WhatsApp, helped me choose an area to live in Tokyo, and even showed me how to find jobs that don’t require perfect Japanese. I’ve been here 8 months now and honestly, it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
Leo K.
I watched so many videos about moving to Japan and still had no idea what was actually possible for me. In the pre-assessment, JoynOne told me clearly that Working Holiday was my best first step instead of jumping straight into a work visa. That honesty helped a lot. Their support with share house options and job-hunting saved me time and stress I definitely didn’t have.
Morgan R.
As a girl coming alone, my biggest worry was where I would live and whether it would be safe. JoynOne showed me several foreigner-friendly share houses and explained the neighbourhoods so I could choose what felt right. They also helped me prepare a simple Japanese CV and practise for interviews. Now I’m working part-time in a café in Tokyo and planning my next trip around Japan.
Samira D.
I wanted to make sure I could start earning quickly after arriving. Through the Working Holiday Programme I managed to interview and secure a part-time job and had everything confirmed before I left my country. JoynOne helped me understand what the job would be like, what the work conditions were, and what to expect. Landing in Japan knowing I already had everything settled for me was a huge relief.

FAQ
Need help? We've got answers!
Who is the Working Holiday Programme for?
The JoynOne Working Holiday Programme is for people who want to live in Japan for up to a year (or two, depending on nationality), travel, experience daily life, and support themselves with part-time or casual work. Most people are between 18–30, want an adventure, and don’t want to figure everything out alone!
Do I need a Working Holiday Visa already to join?
You don’t need the visa before talking to us, but to actually join and use the programme you must be eligible for a Japanese Working Holiday Visa and able to get it from the Japanese embassy or consulate in charge of your country of residence. We can guide you with general information, but the final decision is always the embassy/consulate.
Do you find a job for me or guarantee a job?
We do not guarantee a job, and we are not a recruitment agency.
We:
Guide you on where and how to look for work
Help you understand what kind of jobs are realistic for you
Share job-hunting tips, CV support, and suggested platforms
In some cases, introduce pre-arranged job opportunities
But the final hiring decision is always made by the company, not by us.
Do you guarantee that my Working Holiday Visa will be approved?
No. We cannot guarantee visa approval, nor can any company legally do so.
What we do:
Help you understand the requirements
Help you organise your documents and avoid obvious mistakes
But your visa is always decided by the Japanese embassy/consulate. If you need detailed legal advice, we will recommend a licensed professional.
What level of Japanese do I need?
You can come on a Working Holiday even with very basic Japanese, but:
More Japanese = more job options and usually better pay
With no Japanese, you’ll need to be more flexible with job type and location
We’ll be honest with you during the pre-assessment about what’s realistic for your current level, and we can suggest ways to improve before or during your stay.
Can I use the Working Holiday to stay in Japan long-term?
For many people, Working Holiday Visa is their first step into Japan. We also provide services in guiding individuals on how to convert to a different long term visa while in Japan.
What if I’m not eligible for Working Holiday?
If you’re not eligible because of age, nationality, or other reasons, it’s not the end. Other options might still be available, such as:
Student Visa
Digital Nomad route (if you qualify)
Work Visa (if your background fits)
Business / Startup routes (for entrepreneurs)
Our Japan Route Assessment will help you see what other paths are realistic for you.
How do I start?
The first step is simple:
Fill in our form and take the Japan Route Assessment (Stage 1)
We’ll review your information and tell you if Working Holiday is a realistic path for you and what your other options are
If it looks like a good fit, you can then move on to the Working Holiday Programme with us
