Shears Pascale

My name is Pascale, and I’m from Washington, DC, the capital of the United States. I moved to Japan because I love Japanese culture, and I wanted to learn the language. However, while I love living here, moving to Japan was a slightly daunting experience. I struggled with the Japanese language, the customs, and even basic things like setting up a bank account. Job hunting as a foreigner in Japan can be very difficult, and I found it difficult to secure a full-time job for a year: but after meeting Joyn, I was able to find a stable job, and get support for my visa!! My current job allows me to be myself, earn a liveable wage, and work in a friendly environment!

Tobias Waters

Hi! My name is Tobias, and I’m from the UK. I first became interested in Japan — like a lot of people — because I was obsessed with video games. The more I found out about the country, the more interested I became in the cuisine, history, and cultural pleasures like onsen. Before I moved here, I had a bit of a struggle with the process of getting a visa: the forms were long, and I had trouble filling them out in a way that would satisfy the immigration officials, which meant that the process took five months, much longer than usual. With Joyn, however, the process was extremely smooth. They helped me to renew my visa, and ensured that not a single word was out of place. As a result, my renewal took a mere three weeks: much faster! Now I can continue my work in Tokyo writing for a website to promote social justice… and sometimes review movies!

Will Benett

My name is Will Bennett, and I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. It had been my dream since I went on exchange in Kagoshima at 16 years old to move to Japan permanently, and so in 2025 I came here with my boyfriend to live here while building my career. Initially, job hunting was incredibly difficult, because I wanted to continue my career in marketing, but building on an existing career like that in Japan is very hard for foreigners. But after meeting Joyn, I was able to both relax AND also find a job I actually wanted to do, rather than just scrambling to find anything available. MY current job is absolutely ideal: I’m growing a lot and having fun whilst doing so! Our international office is lit, it’s fire, and it’s definitely the VIBE!

Winnie Dai Yun

Hi! My name is Winnie, and I’m from China. I’ve always been interested in Japanese culture, especially art and fashion. That’s why I decided to study Cultural Heritage at university in Tokyo. When I first started looking for a job in Japan, I wasn’t very confident in my Japanese, and I really struggled with the group discussion interviews... They’re really different from what we do in China. Also, job hunting in Japan starts a year before graduation, and there’s a strict timeline with so many steps. I felt a bit lost and overwhelmed at first. But after meeting with Joyn, I finally learnt how to land my ideal job in Japan. Now, I work at a company with many people from different countries, where I can use English, Japanese, and Chinese. I’m really enjoying my job, and it’s great to see that my skills in communication and content creation are actually helping people.
